Making a name in the local hip hop scene, Loca B is an aspiring artiste with a strong vision in making a change through her music by carrying notes of women and self-empowerment in the art she serves. Appearing on ep. 7 of 16 Baris Season 2, the platform has put her in the list of new emerging rappers. Albeit a very young career, she has done hosting for many underground hip hop concerts, events & interview shows allowing her to be well versed in the local hip hop culture.
What were your dreams growing up? When did you deliver your passion/gift for music/rap? I used to want to be a veterinarian because I love animals but my passion has always been performing. I wanted to be a dancer. I only started writing two years ago.
How did you get into music/rap? What made you take that leap? I was in a dark place, and I started writing to cope. it was more like poetry back then. Then slowly posted videos of my rap on my IG. It gave me the courage to change my life completely. I was tired of not living the life I wanted I didn’t want my son to see me unhappy. it was a now or never decision. so I took the leap.
What are some of the challenges you had to overcome in the music/rap industry? How did you get around those? tbh, it has been smooth sailing because I’ve been surrounded by the right people. A lot of people come to you with sweet sweet promises but then that’s all it is; promises. Most people just want to benefit from you. I always keep in mind to not jump at the first sign of “opportunity”. people can help you but at the end of the day, your own hard work and dedication will determine how far you go.
What do you think is the main challenge that women face in the current society? That we are still underestimated. Fewer opportunities are given to women. our value depreciates more when we have more baggage (having kids etc). Women are always questioned more often on their choices
What changes can be made so that women can feel more empowered? What changes are you looking to effect with your current position or experience? We have to be the change we want to see. it’s in what I do, and how I carry myself. being an example of a successful woman, despite being a single mother (then) was my objective. I wanted to inspire women, girls. The lyrics that I wrote in my first song Dendam Wanita, about the hardships we share as females living in a patriarchal society are the things I want us to talk about and say “hey this is not okay”.
